As a small group of teachers in the Owensboro Independent School District, we are attempting to bridge the gap between traditional curricula and project-based learning (that uses design thinking to solve the essential question driving each project). We are not officially sanctioned or authorized by the district to be a “design school,” but we have taken it upon ourselves to forge a new era of learning that engages and empowers all students to become independent thinkers and problem-solvers. Our core group consists of four teachers from one middle school and a lone high-school teacher. Whether or not we will be able to continue or efforts depends on the level of support we get from administrators.
